Private Equity

Samuel P. Wertheimer, Ph.D., is a Private Equity Partner. He joined OrbiMed in 2000. Dr. Wertheimer was previously Director, Office of Industrial Liaison at the New York University School of Medicine. From 1996 to 1998, he was a Director of Technology Assessment at Paramount Capital. Prior to his tenure at Paramount, his professional experience includes roles as a Registered Patent Agent with Darby & Darby and a Fellow at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Wertheimer received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from New York University, an M.P.H. from Yale University and a B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University.

Robert Glassman, M.D., is a Private Equity Partner. He joined OrbiMed in 2009 after eight years with Merrill Lynch & Co. where he was most recently a Managing Director in the healthcare investment banking group. Prior to his role in banking, he was a vice-president of private equity investments at Merrill Lynch Ventures, where he specifically oversaw healthcare investments. Before Merrill Lynch, Dr. Glassman was a consultant in McKinsey & Company's healthcare practice, where he served a variety of pharmaceutical, medical product, and provider clients. He has co-authored several articles in peer reviewed journals and spoken in industry and academic forums on drug commercialization, biotechnology innovation, oncology clinical development, biomarker utility, and pharmaceutical R&D. Dr. Glassman is a board certified hematologist-oncologist and clinical assistant professor at Weill-Cornell University Medical College and New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, did his residency in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and his fellowship in hematology and oncology at Cornell. He concurrently spent several years as a basic science investigator at Rockefeller University, where he held Howard Hughes Medical Institute and American Cancer Society awards.

Rishi Gupta, J.D., joined OrbiMed in 2004 and is a Principal on the Private Equity Team. Previously, he was a healthcare investment banker at Raymond James & Associates, served as Manager of Corporate Development at Veritas Medicine, and was a summer associate at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Mr. Gupta has published scientific articles on the mechanisms of HIV entry into host cells and legal articles on intellectual property laws in the developing world. He received his A.B. degree magna cum laude in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College and holds a J.D. from the Yale Law School. Rishi currently serves as a director on the boards of Sientra & Gelesis, and as an observer on the boards of Acceleron Pharma, Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Athersys, and Aragon Pharmaceuticals. He was formerly an observer on the boards of CoGenesys (acquired by Teva, 2008) and Receptos, and is actively involved with OrbiMed's investment in Adimab.

David Bonita, M.D., joined OrbiMed in 2004 and is a Principal on the Private Equity Team. Prior to joining Orbimed, Dr. Bonita worked as a corporate finance analyst in the healthcare investment banking groups of Morgan Stanley and UBS. He has also published scientific articles in peer reviewed journals based on signal transduction research performed at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Bonita received his A.B. degree magna cum laude in Biological Sciences from Harvard University and his joint M.D./M.B.A. from Columbia University where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society.

Chau Q. Khuong joined OrbiMed Advisors, LLC, in 2003 to focus on biotechnology and medical device investments in both private equity and small capitalization public companies. Mr. Khuong has experience in start-up operations and business development at Veritas Medicine, Inc. and in basic science research at the Yale School of Medicine and at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a summer Associate in the New Ventures technology transfer group at Columbia University. Mr. Khuong holds a BS in molecular, cellular and developmental biology with a concentration in biotechnology and an MPH with a concentration in infectious disease, both from Yale University. He was actively involved in OrbiMed investments in Arius Research, Inc. (acquired by Roche in 2008), Peninsula Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (acquired by Johnson & Johnson, Inc., in 2005), Cerexa, Inc. (acquired by Forest Laboratories, Inc., in 2007), Adiana, Inc. (acquired by Cytyc Corpo ration in 2007), Biodel, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOD) and Emphasys Medical, Inc. Mr. Khuong currently serves on the board of directors at Cerapedics, Inc., and is an observer on the board of directors at Biolex Therapeutics, Glaukos Corporation, Igenica, and Pieris AG.

David M. Darst is a Senior Associate on the Private Equity team. Mr. Darst is a co-founder of two biotechnology companies with treatments in clinical development for Age-Related Macular Degeneration and for Tuberculosis. He also co-founded an Internet health company, and worked as a summer associate with McKinsey & Company, Pfizer, and Millennium Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Darst earned an A.B. degree cum laude from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
